Terms and Conditions

PREAMBLE

Copyright law provides certain exclusive rights to the author of a work, including rights to reproduce, modify, and distribute the work. "Copyleft" is an attempt to willfully revoke the exclusivity of those rights under certain terms and conditions so that others can reproduce or distribute the work. All subsequent reproductions are used or distributed under the same terms as the original.

The intent of this License is to be a “copyleft” agreement for the kriyas, lectures, and books made available on this website. This License provides the terms and conditions under which these works may be copied, distributed, or modified.

1. DEFINITIONS

“License” means this copyleft License. “Work(s)” mean all kriyas, lectures, and books made available on this website. “Author” means the copyright holder(s) of the Works. The individual licensees are referred to as “you” and “your.”

2. RIGHTS AND COPYRIGHT

The copyrights to the Works are owned by the Author. All rights to the Works are reserved by the Author, except as specifically described herein. This License describes the terms and conditions under which the Author permits you to copy, distribute, and modify copies of the Works.

3. COPYING AND DISTRIBUTION

Subject to the terms set forth herein, this License grants a world-wide, perpetual, royalty free license, to use, copy, distribute, or otherwise present verbatim copies of the Works in any medium for non-commercial educational purposes only; provided, however, that this License, the copyright notices, and the license notice stating that this License applies to the Works are reproduced in all subsequent copies.

4. MODIFICATION

The rights granted under this License allow only for the verbatim copying of the Works. You may not alter, modify or sample from a copy of the Works, produce derivative works, or otherwise distribute derivative works without the prior written consent of the Author. Notwithstanding the above, the Author encourages proposals for collaborative efforts to develop derivative works and/or new materials incorporating or referencing the Works and asks that all requests to modify or alter the Works released under this License be made by way of this website.

5. COLLECTIONS AND COMBINATIONS OF WORKS

You may make a collection consisting of individual Works released under this License and replace the individual copies of this License in the various individual Works with a single copy of the License that is included in the collection, provided that all restrictions and rules set forth in this License for verbatim copying of each of the individual Works are followed in all other respects. You may also select a single document from such a collection and distribute it individually under this License, provided that you include a copy of this License with the individual document and follow this License in all other respects regarding verbatim copying of the individual document.

You may also combine a Work with other Works released under this License provided that all restrictions and rules set forth in this License for verbatim copying of each of the individual Works are followed in all other respects. The combined Work need only contain one copy of this License.

You may not combine into an aggregate any of the Works released under this License with other separate and independent documents or works, or use any of the Works released under this License as part of a collection including separate and independent documents or works.

6. NO RESTRICTIONS

You may not impose any further restrictions on the use, copying, distribution or modification of the Works beyond those restrictions described in this License.

7. ACCEPTANCE

Using, copying, distributing, or otherwise presenting the Works released under this License indicates acceptance of the terms of this License. If you do not follow the terms of this License, any rights granted to you by the License are null and void. You may not copy, distribute, or otherwise present the Works except as expressly provided under this License. Any attempt to use, copy, distribute, or modify the Works contrary to the terms of this License is void and will automatically terminate your rights under this License. Termination of your rights under this section does not terminate the licenses of parties who have received copies or rights from you under this License.

9. NO WARRANTY

THE WORKS ARE PROVIDED “AS IS” AND COME WITH NO WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, TO THE EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE.

10. DISCLAIMER

THE AUTHOR SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY DIRECT, CONSEQUENTIAL, INCIDENTAL, INDIRECT, SPECIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES WHATSOEVER ARISING OUT OF OR RELATING TO THE WORKS OR THIS LICENSE, EVEN IF ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGE.

Please keep in mind, lecture transcripts are a verbatim capture of what Yogi Bhajan said and how he said it. All spoken language has a unique ungrammatical cadence. The transcripts are not edited and follow the audio/video as closely as possible. There may be spelling or transliteration errors and we are grateful to know about them, so we can correct them. Thank you.

All Together

In The Yogi Bhajan Library of Teachings®, query text is parsed using a grammar similar to the Google grammar. For example, double-quoted phrases in query text such as the following are treated as phrases in a search: "yoga of awareness"

The default grammar also supports AND , OR , grouping with parentheses ( ) , and negation with a minus sign ( - ). You can combine all of these elements of the grammar together to easily form complex queries. The following is a summary of the default grammar:

Keyword Example Description
any terms pineal pituitary Searches for documents matching all terms. The example matches documents that have both the term pineal and the term pituitary.
AND pineal AND pituitary Combines the terms on either side with an AND . This example is equivalent to the previous example, as AND is the default way to combine terms.
OR pineal OR pituitary Combines the terms on either side with an OR . The example matches documents that have at least one of either of the terms pineal or pituitary.
" " "yoga of awareness" Anything within the double-quote marks is treated as a phrase. The example matches documents having the phrase "yoga of awareness" (without the double-quote marks).
NEAR pineal NEAR pituitary Matches terms on either side of the NEAR where they are within 10 terms of each other. The example matches documents where pineal is within 10 terms of pituitary . If you add a / followed by a number to the keyword, then it uses the number to specify the number of terms for the distance. For example, pineal NEAR/2 pituitary matches pineal within 2 terms of pituitary .
( ) (pineal OR pituitary) thymus Indicates grouping. The example matches documents that have at least one of the terms pineal or pituitary, and also have the term thymus.
- pineal -pituitary Indicates a NOT query. The example matches documents matching pineal but not matching pituitary.

Note: keywords AND , OR and NEAR must be upper-case.

The Yogi Bhajan Library of Teachings® supports two wildcard characters: * and ? . * matches zero or more non-space characters. ? matches exactly one non-space character.

For example, he* will match any word starting with he , such as he , her , help , hello , helicopter , and so on. On the other hand, he? will only match three-letter words starting with he , such as hem , hen , and so on.

If the search term is lower-case, this implies no preference for case, and the search engine executes a case-insensitive query. If the query uses any capital letters, it executes a case-sensitive query.

The Yogi Bhajan Library of Teachings® supports stemming. The server automatically searches for words that come from the same stem of the word specified in the query, not just the exact string specified in the query. Stemming enables the search to return highly relevant matches that would otherwise be missed. For example, the terms run , running , and ran all have the same stem. Therefore, a stemmed search for the term run returns results that match elements containing the terms running , ran , and runs , as well as results for the specified term run .

The Yogi Bhajan Library of Teachings® supports a number of search Constraints. Constraints have the structure term:<value> . If the constraint value contains spaces, it must be enclosed in double-quote marks. The entire constraint expression can be combined with other search expressions using the standard search grammar. Examples of valid constraints are:

city:Berlin and location:"Los Angeles" .

Here is a list of supported constraints. The first five are also part of the Facet list on the left panel of the Search page. When you click one of the facet values, it is automatically AND ed to the search expression.

Constraint Example Description
decade: decade:1970s Constrains the search to the specified Decade. This constraint is included on the Facets list.
media: media:video Constrains the search to a Media type. This constraint is included on the Facets list.
eventType: eventType:Gurdwara Constrains the search to an Event Type. This constraint is included on the Facets list.
city: city:Hamburg Constrains the search to the specified City. This constraint is included on the Facets list.
country: country:"United States" Constrains the search to the specified Country. This constraint is included on the Facets list.
title: title:"Khalsa Women" Constrains the search to a word or phrase in the lecture Title.
location: location:Herndon
location:Mexico
Constrains the search to a word or phrase in any of the lecture City, State or Country values. The second example would bring up matches where the country equals Mexico or the state equals New Mexico.
keyword: keyword:pineal Constrains the search to a word or phrase in the lecture Keywords list.
eventCode: eventCode:BC02 Constrains the search to an Event Code.
libraryCode: libraryCode:LA-0860 Constrains the search to the archive library code. This is the code Siri Ved Singh used to identifiy lectures he recorded.
date: date:1984-07-24 Constrains the search to a lecture presentation date. Be sure to always use 2-digit months and days when using this constraint. For example, the 4th of July, 1987 is written as 1984-07-04 (NOT 1987-7-4).
adate: adate GT 2003-12-31 AND adate LT 2004-06-01 This powerful constraint allows searches on a date range. Use with the GT (greater than), GE (greater than or equal to), LT (less than) or LE (less than or equal to) operators. The example returns lectures from the first five months of 2004.

Here is an example of how you can put The Yogi Bhajan Library of Teachings® search grammar and constraints together to form a more complex and powerful query.

Let's say you are looking for a lecture that Yogi Bhajan gave in the first half of 1991, where he spoke about Guru Ram Das. You know that the lecture was given either in Espanola or Los Angeles, and that it was not a Gurdwara lecture. Plus, you only want to see lectures where you can watch the video. Here is a query that will return the results that you want:

("Guru Ram Das" AND (city:Espanola OR city:"Los Angeles") AND (adate GE 1991-01-01 AND adate LE 1991-06-30) AND media:video) -eventType:gurdwara

If this statement looks completely confusing, just keep reading. It's not as bad as it looks.

The main expression is between the outside parentheses and " AND s" the four separate sub-expressions together. Each of these separate search expressions must be satisfied for a lecture to be returned in the results.

"Guru Ram Das" is a multi-word text query. By enclosing the expression in quotes, the entire literal string is searched. If we entered Guru Ram Das without quotes, the search engine would interpret it as Guru AND Ram AND Das , which would return very different results.

(city:Espanola OR city:"Los Angeles") specifies that the lecture city is either Espanola or "Los Angeles" . "Los Angeles" is in quotes since it is a multi-word expression (contains spaces). The entire expression is enclosed in parentheses so that it is evaluated as a single OR expression.

(adate GE 1991-01-01 AND adate LE 1991-06-30) restricts the search to lecture dates that are greater than or equal to 01/01/1991 and less than or equal to 06/30/1991 . This would include any lectures given in the first half of 1991. The expression is enclosed in parentheses so that it is evaluated before AND ing the other main expressions.

media:video restricts the search to only lectures which have video.

Finally -eventType:gurdwara uses the NOT operator, - , to exclude any lectures from the previous result set which are Gurdwara lectures.

As you can see, even complex queries are manageable if you construct them expression by expression. Try it out yourself!
