For a long time in the past fifty years the word meditationMeditation Dhyan. It is a process of deep concentration or merger into an object or a state of consciousness. Meditation releases reactions and unconscious habits and build the spontaneous and intuitive link to awareness itself. is very prominent in certain sections of North America. Before that there was a very strong group theosophical society which brought certain eastern philosophy to the western world. Western world is basically very, very young, two hundred years of a nation is equal to two days of man's life.

I have never seen, as a good student of human history, that in two hundred years a mightiest people like Americans can commit blunders for which there is no answer. I have never seen I am back here in ten years, in ten years the rate of suicide, rate of divorce and rate of family split, rate of moral values have gone so much deep down the hill in my presence that I can't even understand.

There are three things which are valuable in a human life-commitment, character, and moral. Commitment is now, character which carries you through the time and space and moral is what ultimately you achieve.

Let us take a broader view. We have inflation, we all know we have inflation and for inflation there is a simple answer, that everybody tie down the belt, but when they found the inflation everybody loosened the belt. Now what a Jimmy Carter and anybody else can do, nothing. Gas price will go up, gas availability will not be there, people will feel scared, people will feel scared things will go up, if things will go scarce, there will be chaos. It has happened many times in many countries, mightiest countries.

Iran had forty billion dollar worth of an army, it evaporated in five days because the moral fiber freaked out. When I came in America I had a hope, I thought Americans have beautiful bodies and beautiful soul, only they have a missing mind.

Mind is a mess, I say well I'll work it out, but I was giving in a very exact figure what I have seen in ten years. You see in the morning your face in the mirror you feel it beautiful and clean. You come back at 3 O'clock and you look at your face there is a big pimple filled with pus, you can't explain it but it is there, pop it up and it will take few days, it will go away and something else will appear. That is how our mind works, there is no logic, there is no reason, there is no argument, there is no environment, there is no pressure which can answer why a particular person is acting in a particular way.

I asked a doctor once I said, "Why you want a divorce?"

He said, "I cannot handle her."

I said, "But you are a doctor, you can handle every patient, think she is a patient, handle her."

He said, "No, it is different."

I said, "Doctor is a doctor, doctor is supposed to handle any patient, period. There is no difference."

And he asked the simple question, "Can you handle every student?"

I said, "I do, I do try my best. I go to the any extent the student wants to go because this is the job of the teacher."

He said, "Well, you know you are a oriental, you have a different background. I can't, I can't do this."

You can't do this, you can't do that, you can't do this, you can't, you want to do this, if we go on doing this and that it can stretch out to be a tragedy.

I personally feel it is our moral right, born right, our personal right to be healthy, happy and holy. Because we do not develop the meditative mind that is why we have to face trouble in our life, there is no trouble. Bad day comes, good day comes, nice days comes, wrong days comes, winter comes, spring has come, summer will come, Fall will come, winter will come again that is a cycle of life. And this cycle of life comes on all people. It won't only come on you or it won't come on me, it will come on everybody. But one thing will not come-your own fiber if will not get to the point that you want the moral values first and your fiber demands it.

If wealth is gone nothing is gone, health is gone something is gone, but if character is gone, it's all western, I am trying to make you feel what western has. If a character is gone everything is gone. Character is nothing but a definite commitment into the moral value. That is why today you marry, you go before a church or before a holy man, you will say, in the name of God I take you and everything is okay later on those two people split. In many cases no counseling can work. Because there is no moral fiber on which a counseling can work. Persons are so limited.

It's a very strange situation I want to explain to you. There is a doctor who is my student, I mean to say eight, nine years through the college, through his proficiency everything we went through. When he became a doctor first thing he wanted was to divorce his wife, when his practice started.

And I simply asked I said, "Why?"

And he asked me direct question. "Why not?"

Because that poor woman worked and took him through the college, medical college, can you believe that? And this was the return.

"Her hair do not smell right."

Now can you believe a woman who gets up 3 O'clock in the morning, does the whole thing, send children to the school and goes to the work, makes the money, come back cook meal and then help him in his work and then cleans everything out by 11 O'clock at night and has done it from last eight years.

And I simply laughed, I said, "Tomorrow you will divorce because her hair has gone gray."

These are the mental values with many people in our society. We cannot direct our life right because we do not have a right value and right value does not come without rightful understanding and rightful understanding cannot be experienced without a character and there is no character without a moral value and there is no moral value without commitment, it's a vicious circle. You slip through one you slip through other, you slip through, it's a endless slip. And now as times are going to be very hard we all need a basic fundamental moral value. To achieve a moral value and a moral fiber one requires a meditative mind.

You can achieve everything through money, you can achieve lot of things through your political influence but it is not possible to achieve your satisfaction and your happiness what you call is happiness without your moral commitment. And lot of people have tried in lot of ways. And to achieve those moral values, that consciousnessConsciousness The nature of the self and being. In the realm of nature, awareness becomes consciousness. It is from the being itself. Being is expressed in consciousness through contrasts and sensations, in awareness through merger, clarity, and reality. , that awarenessAwareness The pure nature of existence; the power to be consciously conscious without an object or need. A fundamental property of the soul and true self; it is Kundalini as it folds and unfolds itself in existence. , to achieve that human experience we need something which expand our strength. And that is where we need guidance, that is where we need counseling, that is where we need to adapt a way of life where we can feel comfortable.

Man is not what man is; man is known by what man does. And this is what we do-we freak out, and then somebody freaks out in our life. So it is such a life it is freak out to freak out, there is no stability. And this non-stability brought a tremendous chaos in the country. Every young man almost got affected with it, 1960 it is called 60s pull out, mostly people got out of the values and even today a normal conscious, God fearing humanistic, holistic American wants to do something about those values.

There is a tremendous trouble among our upper middle class. There is a tremendous amount of trouble in our lower income group. There is a terrible chaos in our middle income group. Because in spite of the fact we are very free people, there is a democracy in our country but we are tremendously controlled by the vested interest.

As I was discussing today it is not possible to drink raw milk, because big companies cannot supply their milk. They cannot allow the localization of the milk. Everybody knew six months ago the gasoline price has to be jacked up, everybody knew it and everybody knew that gasoline has to become scarce to jack up the price every commoner knows but you can't do everything about it. What will happen is that every average American feels nothing wrong can happen to us. Because we do not have mental strength to cope with the social stress and that is why these days different people for different reason are trying to become holistic. They want to know who they are, what they are, what can they do for themselves. And that is why though it is being said yoga is a eastern philosophy, it is Hindu thing, this, bah-bah-bah but basically some people do find lot of comfort through it. Some people have gained lot of strength through it just on the physical part of it. But those who are fortunate they are trying to go little deeper into mental side of it and the approach of the mind and to go into the fiber of the mind for one's own use is called meditationMeditation Dhyan. Intuition is an automatic self-conscious process which is attached to our brain. It's a part of our life. We can be so intuitive and so sensitive that we can feel our total relationship with our total environment and if we do not feel our total environment with our total self, we will be just walking in a darkness. Each individual has his own environment and his individual self and for the sake of harmony the relationship should be totally harmonious. You cannot have the peace of mind and happiness of life and harmony of your life until and unless you do not achieve that state of sensitivity. Is that clear?

When it is not clear just let me know I'll like to make you understand, you may become a yogiYogi One who has attained a state of yoga (union) where polarities are mastered and transcended. One who practices the disciplines of yoga and has attained self-mastery. or not but my idea is to at least give you a basic understanding about the science of meditationMeditation Dhyan. Majority of the people who cannot relate to total sensitivity and to their self fall into they call it pit of ignorance, it means they get into trouble.

And unfortunately certain people like to develop a philosophy, follow a direction but they do not follow the direction to develop their mind to asses the direction.

You ask me a question I give you a direction, it may not be suitable for you. Basically you are required to judge your own assessment of your mind to implement the direction and that is the greatest phenomena in every human life, the sensitivity of the self and the sensitivity of the surrounding of the self are not harmonious.

Now we talk about God, mostly people talk about God and when we talk about God we talk about God, God is everywhere but still we find Him outside than us. If God is everywhere what is wrong inside? We always say we are suffering, it's a expression. Who is suffering? Outside? No, it is the inside, the cavity the gap which does not understand the self and that self cannot relate to the circumstances in which that self is. When the circumstances of the self and the surrounding of the self are non harmonious, person feels the pain. When they are harmonious person feel the pleasure.

I like to share with you a simple test. Take your these two fingers and press them and take these two fingers and press them. And stretch it this way and then look straight and after looking straight look left, look right and find out for yourself do you see those stretched fingers at the same height or at different height when you see at different sides. Just keep the hands in front of you about sixty degrees like this so that you can look on corner and you turn this way, turn in center, turn this way, free movements. First look on the right side, then look straight and then look on the left side and then look straight and then look on the right again. Relax.

What did you find?

YB: Some will find slight difference, some will find the same level, and some will find absolutely no level. These are very ordinary three feelings which you can get out of this. Try it again so that you can be absolutely sure and accurate what you are finding. Make it like this as I, this is a correct position, angular towards you not big like this, but just like this, look this way, look this way, look this way, look this way, couple of times. Relax.

Those who found difference in level please raise your hands.

Okay, those who found they are at same level. Those who found that they cannot judge the level. Well these are three stages which are normal.

Now do another experiment, just I am trying to relate to your mind. Same two fingers put it this way, just like this, as simple as that and then move them like this and move them like this and find out does it move in the same direction with the same distance or you find difference or you find no difference, the same three stages, do it couple of times.

YB: The movement is the straight but you will find sometime it is widening, sometime distance, the movement is not straight, movement is straight and you don't find difference. Please relax. Now in this you are the same person, but you are doing the same thing but there can be three possibilities of your feeling, some can feel they are walking in straight line, some can feel when they move there is a difference in the horizon of the movement and third, some feel absolutely there is no feeling, they can't judge. Positive, negative, and neutral; that is how the life goes. Same life, same human being, same energy, same time, same space, you can direct the energy to be positive, you can direct the energy to be negative, and you can direct the energy to be?

Students: Neutral.

YB: When it is neutral you won't enjoy life. When it is negative you will be afraid and when it is positive you will be afraid. Fear will catch you on both sides, don't misunderstand that. Normally people think when I am divine I am doing God's work I should be positive then I should not be afraid. Why not?

There is a tremendous amount of failure and fear of failure. When you go to the positive you want to do everything, there is one thing which is your enemy right on the spot and that is phobia, fear. When you are doing negative then also you are afraid, then you are afraid if I'll be caught, a thief is afraid if I'll be caught, I'll go to jail. Policeman is afraid if within his beat something is stolen he will be demoted. So basically, fear works, the personal phobia, works on both sides of the movement and therefore on a God's path you are not happy, on a devil's path you are not happy. So you say, why I should go and meditate? Why should I get up in the morning? Why should I do that?

One student once asked me, "Why I have to get up 3 O'clock and meditate, those who get up 9 O'clock are all right, they are alive too."

Once one asked me, "Why I have to marry? You think those who just live with the girls they are not happy, they are not alive?"

To be alive is not the proposition. Are you content? Are you aware? Are you satisfied? That is the question. If your mind is not expanded, your awarenessAwareness The pure nature of existence; the power to be consciously conscious without an object or need. We have seen in our 3HO, it's a way of life. Many people come from many backgrounds, doesn't matter, they meditate. Sometime they start becoming very positive and we tell them, "Slow down, slow down, don't hurry."

"Why?"

I said, "Well, it's a long way, long way, long way, take it easy."

And some people after a while, first SadhanaSadhana , Saadhana A spiritual discipline; the early morning practice of yoga, meditation, and other spiritual exercises. Sit down straight wherever you are, stretch your legs straight, straight, there is no big deal, put your heels together let us do it. Okay, and take your both hands and put it before your face and close your eyes and stretch backwards and try to see, try to see through the closed eyes if you can see anything. Keep the eyes closed, keep the face covered with hands and see directly through. There will be color patterns, there will be animals, God knows, lot of things one can see.

YB: Not too much, just to give enough pressure to the lower back, not much. Look straight through the closed eyes, don't close too much, just close them as eyes are to be closed. Put a hand over your both sides to cover that area and just very calmly and quietly look through it. You are looking definitely through the closed eyes though.

Now please remove your hands and open your eyes. You did it for three minutes, now simply close your eyes and put your hands forward straight like this, just straight like that, bend little back, little not much and close your eyes and see through it.

Look straight.

Look right through your eyes when they are closed. Make the forehead as a screen of a movie theatre.

Inhale, relax.

Okay please tell me if anybody can tell me any unusual thing you saw.

YB: (?); anybody who saw any animal? How many of you saw color patterns?

YB: That is different than the colors. Yes?

YB: Horizontal and normally those who saw color patterns they saw this way?

Now stretch again, now put your hands straight and bend backward little bit, close your eyes, look through straight as looking in a cinema and breathe very slowly. Control breath very slowly.

YB: Colors don't mean anything so far you see the color one color you can see black, you can see dark, you can see different patterns of color, you can see vegetables, you can see animals. It's a kind of a what we were invoking was a dream state anything you can see, that doesn't matter so long you see something. Whole body should be straight and like this, but these two index fingers should be so stiff that they should be like an iron rod, total strength of the body should go to the index finger, that's all you have to do. And I will put you, you have to do it more than five minutes, five minutes and one second, let us do that way, okay.

Index finger should be totally tough and stiff.

YB: Eyes closed, that's true.

YB: Say just like this, there is no, whole body is to just establish one factor; the index finger, the knowledge finger should be totally stiff like a steel, put total tension into it. Okay we mark your time.

With closed eyes proceed and aim it that you have to do it for six minutes but at five minutes we'll let you know. Don't let the tension in the index finger leave you at all. Make it very tense. It is these very precious minutes and it is that tension which can do very good. Keep the finger more tense even you can start.

I wish in the coming time of life we may have a system that we can show everybody before its own mirror and its own expansion of its own auraAura The radiant field of energy and consciousness that surrounds the physical body and which holds and organizes the seven centers of energy called chakras. Its strength, measured by brightness and radius, determines the vitality, mental concerns, and psychophysical integrity of a person. and that is the greatest strength of mind is, if mind can be brought to the equilibrium of reality and to its meditative capacity, then out of each person can grow the vibrations which are called to be harmonious and that is where lies the friendship, where lies the rejoicing, where lies the pleasure and where lies the extension of life.

YB: Stress environment when the inlet of the energy and the consumption of the energy in relation to the environment is not balanced, it is called stress. Basically, when one is pressurized by the inconvenience of the environments at that time you have to feel you as a matching to the environments and at that time you cannot feel you are individual. If the attack is from this side, just understand that other three sides are with you, if your mind can feel that you immediately will be in a relaxed state of mind and you can handle anything. But if you understand hyperly that oh my God this is, it is coming then you will just feel yourself numb. That is what tomorrow we are trying to experiment to go within and feel that strength so that without the outside world can be balanced. You understand that?

YB: My idea of asking you is there are three bodies you have got, one is physical body, one is mental body, one is spiritual body, if you do not know to relate to all these three bodies it will be difficult for you to relate to your total nucleus and total balance. You understand? You can clean your body with lot of soap and lot of water and make it perfect but if mental body in thought form is not clean, it will give you lot of trouble. And it's the flow of the spirit, the duct of the flow of the spirit is blocked that will give you lot of trouble also. So it is a triple action, it is the trinity of the man which has to be brought into the unison ness of the man, that is the procedure. That's why we give these meditationMeditation Dhyan. It is a process of deep concentration or merger into an object or a state of consciousness. YB: Normally mind will see the difference, the optical nerve will see the difference between these two areas, normal, it is normal, it's usual. Sometime you will feel too much that it is the same distance, that is a concentration and then you can get into a state where you can be totally confused, you do not know whether it is really equidistance or it is not. So those are three forms but once you are very meditative then actually there is no form, it is your hand, it is where you keep it.

YB: Yeah that is what I was, I was going to discuss that later, but I just kept it in reservoir. My hand is where I keep it, I am I am; that is actually the real state of mind. You know, if I am in trouble I put myself in trouble what is the problem, what is the trouble? I tell you the simple state of mind.

Once a driver was driving the car, he got into accident and somebody asked him, "Oh my God it's a terrible accident."

He said, "No, it was a terrible driving."

It is not a terrible accident, there is no such thing as accident, it was that driving which was terrible. These little experiments and these little meditationsMeditation Dhyan. YB: If you are, there is no such thing unattached because you are always attached to the unattached. It is the attachment to the unattached. You know well the problem is, this is what problem is, western people do not know the scripture, so they have to be translated in English. So people come here and they translate it in the way it suits the western people. And they tell thing don't feel attached, all right, don't feel attached is an attachment in itself.

Fear and anxiety is a part of the movement, therefore when you go to the higher consciousnessConsciousness The nature of the self and being. In the realm of nature, awareness becomes consciousness. But once it accept it then there is no fear. Accept it I am progressing, accept it, accept it I am alive. People don't accept it that they are alive. Some people look at the mirror, nose is not right, therefore get the surgery done.

Why?

It is not right, they don't accept their very nose. Many things in your life you don't accept and you like to correct them, but those things may not be part of you, they may be total of you.

Fear is not a part of you; with every movement it must grow, you accept it there will be no fear. Everybody say accept the will of God, nobody accepts it, they say it. Who accepts it. Once you accept it there will be total harmony, there will be total peace, you will be total saintly person, move anywhere it will be all perfect. We say it we accept it; we don't accept it in reality, in practicality.
